3/31/09 TLP 2824 Plus™ User Guide 980643-001 Rev. A
Localizing the Printer with Code Pages
The 2824 Plus printer supports two sets of language, region and character sets for permanent
fonts loaded into the printer for each printer programming language, ZPL and EPL. The printer
supports localization with common international character map code pages.
For ZPL code page support, including Unicode, see the ^CI command in the ZPL
programmer’s guide.
For EPL code page support, see the I command in the EPL programmers guide.
Asian fonts and Other Large Font Sets
Asian character sets, such as Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, and Japanese,
contain many thousands of characters while Latin-based character sets contain less than 256
characters. Historically, the industry has supported these large Asian character sets through
double byte character sets, as opposed to the single byte character sets used for Latin-based
characters. Each Asian double byte character set is independent from the others presenting
issues such as mapping conflicts and constraints with using them simultaneously. Unicode, a
universal character set, was conceived to consolidate and resolve the complications that result
from using multiple independent character sets. Unicode includes all the characters from the
independent character sets thus resolving the issues of character mapping conflicts and
requirements to use multiple character sets. ZPL programming language supports Unicode and
Unicode-compliant fonts. EPL programming language does not support Unicode.
Zebra offers non-Unicode compliant Asian fonts for EPL and ZPL programming languages.
Zebra offers two (2) Unicode compliant fonts for multi language printing, they are:
Swiss721 that supports European, Middle Eastern, and African (EMEA) languages.
Andale that supports EMEA and Southeast Asian and CJKV languages.
These Unicode compliant fonts can only be used with the ZPL programming language.
Memory requirements:
Asian language support using non-Unicode or Unicode compliant fonts require the factory
fitted Full Flash Memory option (64Mb).
Printers with the standard memory option (4MB) can support the Unicode compliant
Swiss721 font available on the Zebra web site.
The number of fonts that can be downloaded is dependent upon the amount of available
flash memory not already in use and the size of the font to be downloaded.
Getting Asian Fonts
Asian font sets are downloaded into the printer by the user or integrator. The fonts are
purchased separately from the printer.
Simplified and Traditional Chinese (ZPL and EPL)
Japanese JIS and Shift-JIS mappings (ZPL and EPL)
Korean (ZPL including Johab and EPL)
Thai (ZPL only)
